The city of White Oak has lifted a boil water notice that was put into effect after a water main break Thursday.

City water samples were tested, and no harmful organisms were found in the water, thus allowing the notice to be lifted, City Coordinator Jimmy Purcell said Saturday afternoon.

White Oak was without water service Thursday after a fiber-optic internet installation crew drilled into a 12-inch water main. Service was restored that night.

A crew with Cerberus Construction Co. hit a 12-inch water main around 10:30 or 11 a.m. in the 1200 block of White Oak Road. The crew was using boring equipment to install fiber-optic internet infrastructure underground.

The high volume of water flowing through the water main damaged the road, compromised a nearby electric pole and left the city without water service. Cerberus crews were installing internet infrastructure for internet provider Sparklight.

Purcell estimated that the city lost up to 250,000 gallons of water as a result of the break.

The incident came two days after the White Oak City Council passed an ordinance requiring companies installing fiber-optic infrastructure to obtain permits before beginning their work. Boring companies have damaged city utilities and other internet infrastructure while performing work this year.
